LOFT IS OUR FRIEND IN THE FAIRWAY

By Arlen Bento Jr.

USGTF Master Golf Teaching Professional I always spend a lot of time explaining to golfers who have trouble with hitting fairway woods that technique and speed are the key factors to improving fairway wood play. One of the little tricks that I have found that works great for the players that struggle with getting a 3 wood up in the air from the fairway is to take a 5 wood and adding and extra inch of length to make a 5 wood the same length as a 3 wood. A normal 3 wood is usually 14 or 15 degrees, which for some people make it difficult to hit. Many players tell me that they hit their 5 woods much better then their 3 woods but they need more distance. Most 5 woods are 18 to 20 degrees so that extra loft is very helpful in getting the ball up in the air. Adding an inch to a 5 wood will automatically increase the club head speed of any player and the result could be a fairway wood that goes as far as a 3 wood but is much more easier to hit.Arlen Bento Jr. is a USGTF Master Teaching Professional, former Head Golf Professional of the PGA Country Club and PGA Village and Director of Golf at Eagle Marsh Golf
